Naguib Sawiris, Coptic co-founder of the Free Egyptians Party, said the party was formed to compete with the Muslim Brotherhood in upcoming parliamentary elections.
“The majority of our members are Muslims, by the way,” he said.
He also said the party aims to open up to the world, consolidate liberalism in Egyptian society and build a secular modern state for all citizens.
Speaking at a party conference in the city of Aswan, Sawiris said that while Egyptians are known to be religious, nobody should abuse religion to mislead the people.
He promised Nubians that he would aid them in their campaign to reclaim land that was taken from them in 1960 to build the High Dam.
