Second cadre of Egyptian technicians to receive nuclear training in Russia

A second group of Egyptian nuclear technicians will travel to Russia for training for three weeks in October, according to sources at the Ministry of Electricity and Energy.

Training courses are expected to cover nuclear fuel studies and material treatment and protection, as well as security systems, the same sources said. The Egyptian team is also expected to receive theoretical and practical training at Russian nuclear power stations.

The sources went on to say that negotiations with France and the US were ongoing for additional training of Egyptian technicians.

In response to recent Israeli claims that Egypt planned to produce a nuclear arsenal, former International Atomic Energy Agency chief inspector Ibrahim al-Assiri said: “Egypt’s nuclear project is designed for the peaceful purpose of producing electricity."

Egypt has announced its intention to establish the country's first nuclear power plant by 2013.
