Security forces fired tear gas and water cannons at a demonstration by dozens of pro-Muslim Brotherhood female Al-Azhar University students Wednesday on Mostafa al-Nahhas Street in Nasr City.
Some students reportedly stood in front of police cars, refusing to move and waving the Rabea al-Adaweya four-finger sign, blocking traffic completely.
Meanwhile, Al-Azhar University boys' campus and dorms remained calm and void of protests amidst a heavy security presence in anticipation of more clashes between students and security forces.
On Tuesday, hundreds of students marched through campus, chanting slogans against the Interior Ministry in protest of the alleged death of two students in Monday's clashes at Al-Azhar University, despite the Health Ministry's announcement that no deaths occurred.
Ten students were arrested in the clashes with security forces on Monday and a private bus was torched by demonstrators.
Students at the university have stepped up protests since a fellow student was killed on campus in clashes by security forces 21 November. The victim was a sixth year medical student named Abdel Ghany Mohamed Hamouda. Students have vowed to continue protesting until the perpetrator of Hamouda's death is brought to justice.
