Security objects to planned demo over Libya beheadings

A group of Coptic Christians has decided to cancel a protest planned this afternoon in Shubra, north of Cairo, to condemn the beheading of 21 Copts by the Islamic State in Libya last week, citing security authorities’ objections.

The news website Vetogate quoted a statement by the activists saying they received an advice from security authorities not to stage the protest for fear of infiltration by rioters.

The Coptic activists had issued a statement on Monday condemning the killings. The statement, published by independent daily Al-Watan, labelled the government’s stance on the killings as “inept” and “oblivious”. The statement accused the presidency, the Cabinet, the Coptic Orthodox Church and political parties of ignoring continuous pleas by the victims’ families to work on the release on their sons.
