Egyptian authorities received 11,000 reports of stolen vehicles since January, said Abdel Fattah Othman, assistant chief of the Interior Ministry's Public Security Department.
“The ministry has managed to return 3000 vehicles," Othman told Al-Hayat2, a private satellite channel.
The ministry identified one of the main car hijacking suspects and is stepping up efforts to apprehend him, Othman said.
Al-Hayat2’s media host, Moataz al-Demerdash, addressed the issue in a previous episode following reports of frequent car thefts nationwide.
Egypt has suffered from a security void after former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly decided to withdraw police forces from the streets on 28 January during the 25 January revolution.
