Security forces arrested five Muslim Brotherhood leaders today morning in Alexandria, group officials said.
On its official website, the Brotherhood said security raided the homes of eight of its leaders. The remaining three were not at their homes at the time.
Security forces on Tuesday detained around 70 Brotherhood campaigners while they were hanging parliamentary poll campaign posters.
The Brotherhood says the latest clampdown on its members and the appropriation of party coffers exposes the regime's intention to rig the parliamentary elections in an effort to serve the interests of the ruling National Democratic Party.
Analysts say Egypt's ruling regime is seeking to avoid a repeat of the 2005 elections in which the Brotherhood claimed substantial electoral gains. In 2005, the Brotherhood seized 88 seats–20 percent of the total number of seats in parliament.
The Brotherhood is contesting 30 percent of the seats in parliament this November.
