Google announced Egypt's top online searches on Wednesday, naming shaabi music as the number one search for 2015, out of a list of popular search categories, including events, public figures, songs and TV shows.
This year is not unlike 2014's results, in terms of popular searches, as the entertainment category had the lion’s share of interest with songs, TV shows and celebrities inundating the trending search for 2015.
The popular shaabi song (also known as Mahragan) “Mafish Saheb Yetsaheb” by the band Shobek Lobek Shaabi was the number one most trending search of the year, followed by prank show “Ramez Wakel Al-Gaw”, which streamed online during the holy month of Ramadan. Pop song “Enta Maalem” by Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred came in third.
The top searches for TV shows included the weekly television play “Masrah Masr”, as well as the satirical show presented by the puppet “Abla Fahita” and the singing competition show “The Voice”.
“Al-Jazeera Part 2” was the most searched movie on Google in Egypt, starring famous actor Ahmed El-Sakka.
In terms of public figures, celebrities who recently passed away topped the search engines in Egypt as the three Egyptian actors Faten Hammama, Omar El-Sharif and Nour Al-Sherif occupied the top three ranks, respectively, in the most searchable people of the year.
Though entertainment was of definite interest to Egyptians this year, they did not completely ignore public events, as the opening of the New Suez Canal ranked first in the most trending events in 2015, followed by the murder of Egypt's Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat.
As long as Egypt’s main sport is football, famous football athletes will always factor into the Google searches. Ranked number one this year was Mohammed Salah, the Egyptian midfielder who plays for the Italian club Roma, followed by midfielders Ramadan Sobhy and Hossam Ghali, both of whom play for the Al-Ahly Egyptian club.
