Sharm El Sheikh operates its first 5 MW solar power plant

Egypt’s South Sinai Governor Khalid Fouda held a press conference on Thursday on the occasion of opening the first solar power plant in Sharm El Sheikh, which as a capacity of 5 megawatts (MW), in cooperation with several energy companies.

Fouda said that the plant is the first stage of a 40 MW integrated solar field project.

The plant will be run as part of the first stage of the nutrition tariff system for renewable energy projects.

The plant will feed the national electricity grid with a capacity of 10 gigawatts per hour–enough to cover more than 2,000 housing units with a carbon footprint reduction of up to 3,506 tons per year.

The Egyptian government aims to transfer production of up to 20 percent of the total energy produced to production from clean sources by 2022.
