Sir Magdi Yacoub: “Caring for humanity is the greatest gift of our civilization”

World-renowned Egyptian heart surgeon, Sir Magdi Yacoub emphasized that the core principle of caring for humanity remains the greatest gift Egyptian civilization has offered the world.

In his recorded speech at the Grand Egyptian Museum’s opening ceremony on Saturday, attended by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and 79 official delegations, Yacoub explained that, “Medicine in Ancient Egypt was a sacred profession.”

“In the Houses of Life, priests learned the secret of anatomy and medicine; they combined the body and the soul and invented tools ahead of their time. They created prosthetic limbs, and performed operations on the brain and heart,” he continued.

“Today, as I stand here in the Grand Egyptian Museum, I see the thread continuing.”

He concluded by drawing a parallel across millennia: “From an ancient Egyptian surgeon holding his scalpel by the light of torches, to a surgeon treating hearts with the tools of the modern age—it is the same endeavor, the same belief that caring for humanity, regardless of nationality, religion, or creed, is the greatest gift our civilization has given to the world.”
