Sisi, King Abdullah meet in Cairo to discuss regional issues, Palestinian state

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi received King Abdullah II of Jordan at Cairo International Airport on Tuesday.

The two leaders held bilateral talks separately, and then held other talks in the attendance of ministers and delegations of both Egypt and Jordan with its capital in Eastern Jerusalem.

They tackled future actions and efforts to push the peace process in the Middle East forward, as well as joint coordination to separate the two countries and establish a Palestinian state on the borders of Jordan.

Several regional issues of common interest were discussed, including the Syrian crisis. The two leaders stressed the necessity of a ceasefire in Syria, as well as protecting the political path lead by the United Nations envoy. They also underlined the importance of the Astana meetings to guarantee that the ceasefire agreement is enforced.

Both Sisi and Abdullah focused on ending the human suffering of the Syrian people, as well as confronting terrorist groups and preventing all sources of funding. They also expressed their support toward the ongoing process to liberate Mosul from the Islamic State group, indicating that supporting reconciliation efforts and political compromise in Iraq is of paramount importance.

Egyptian efforts toward uniting Libya were mulled over, as well as the international community's efforts to face extremism and terrorism.

The two heads of state highlighted the importance of the common supreme committees, headed by the two countries' prime ministers, in order to tackle the development of bilateral ties and follow up on the implementation of agreements and memoranda of understanding signed in different fields during the last meeting held in Cairo in August 2016.

Sisi expressed his hope of taking part in the Arab Summit, slated for March in Jordan, as well as his confidence that the kingdom will succeed in hosting such an event. He also aspried for decisions to be taken to confront the challenges facing the Arab nation.

They put an emphasis on the Arab League support's in seeking unity among Arab nations so as to confront and solve challenges.

After the talks, Sisi gave a luncheon honoring the king and the accompanying delegation ahead of escorting him to the airport before going to Amman.
