As only few hours are separating Muslims from the start of the holy month of Ramadan for the year 1443 AH, Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics the formation of six committees.
This is in coordination with the Dar al-Iftaa to sight the crescent, on Friday, and announce the start of Ramadan.
Muslim institutions announce the start of the holy month every year once the crescent is born.
Friday, the 29th of Sha’ban for the year 1443 AH, corresponding to April 1, 2022, is the day of the crescent sighting this year.
Astronomically the first day of Ramadan this year is on Saturday, April 2, 2022.
The six committees are distributed to the governorates of Matrouh, Fayoum, Helwan, Sohag, Qena and Aswan.
Each committee includes members from the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics, Dar al-Iftaa, and sheikhs affiliated with the Endowments Ministry and Al-Azhar in the governorates in which the monitoring takes place.
The locations of the crescent sighting are carefully chosen.
They are chosen far from the illumination of cities and observations will be made immediately after sunset through telescopes and the naked eye.
