Courts in Alexandria, Damanhour and Minya suspended work for the second day on Sunday, while many other courts around the country operated normally.
The Judges Club had called for courts to strike in response to President Mohamed Morsy’s constitutional declaration immunizing his decisions from judicial oversight. On Thursday, Morsy also dismissed controversial Prosecutor General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud.
Judge’s said that Morsy’s decree is a violation of judicial authority. During a Judges Club general assembly on Saturday night, club head Ahmed al-Zend called for courts to suspend their work.
Prosecutors around the country have gone on a partial strike, with only one prosecutor attending court sessions in Cairo and Giza district to renew detention periods for suspects in custody.
The prosecutors refused to take action on any reports or complaints and emphasized that they only appeared in court so that detainees would not be released.
