Son of former NDP MP arrested for possessing bomb

Security forces arrested a man for hiding a bomb on his person on the east bank of the Suez Canal on Friday morning. He was arrested before boarding a ferry to the other shore.

The man, a 32 year old agricultural engineer, is believed to be the son of Al-Sayed Selim, an MP for the National Democratic Party under Hosni Mubarak.

The man tried to evade capture by threatening to defuse the bomb, blowing up himself and the surrounding area, but special security forces were able to stop him.

Ship movement was suspended for nearly two hours until security forces contained the situation.

The accused was transferred to Port Fouad Police Station and is being prepared for transfer to military prosecution.

The Selim family owns agricultural land and fish farms in the south and east of Port Said and reportedly has links with North Sinai Bedouins.
