Ain-Shams University students affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood opposition movement staged protests on campus against perceived "interference" by security forces in student union elections.
Police cordoned off the campus to prevent students from taking to the streets. Nevertheless, angry demonstrators managed to storm the campus gate after clashing with security personnel.
Police eventually agreed to allow student demonstrators to continue their protest on the sidewalk outside the university.
Meanwhile, scores of Assiut University students demonstrated against a university decision to deny them residence in the university's dormitory. Protesters also claimed that university administrators had banned them from running in student union elections.
Students at a number of technical institutes throughout the country also staged protests against a recent Education Ministry decision to deny them admission to state universities except on an audit basis.
