The student union at Cairo University’s Faculty of Arts said Wednesday they were staging a protest to denounce the death of a colleague, who died following a heart attack, after an observer kicked her out of her exam.
Mayyada Mohamed reportedly could not bear the psychological stress of being dismissed from the exam room for not switching her cell phone, which is university policy during test taking.
Omar, Mayyada’s brother, told Dream channel late Tuesday that his sister’s cell phone rang accidentally during her exam, to which the observer accused her of using the phone for cheating.
In a statement the student union pushed for an investigation into the incident, stressing that it “will never tolerate any assault on students by any person whatever his post or identity”.
Cairo University President Gaber Nassar mourned the student on his Facebook, but stressed that the university took all necessary medical measures to address her condition. He also promised an investigation into her alleged dispute with the observer and claims that he had forcibly withdrawn her answer sheet.
