The Suez Canal during October recorded unprecedented navigational statistic rates, achieving the highest monthly tonnage in the history of the canal, amounting to 112.1 million tons, the head of the Suez Canal Authority, Osama Rabie, announced.
Rabie added in a statement Tuesday that 1,847 ships crossed the canal in October, compared to 1,620 ships in October 2020, up by 227 ships or 14 percent.
The total net tonnages recorded 112.1 million tons, compared to 100.6 million tons in October 2020, an increase of 11.5 million tons or 11.4 percent.
He added that the revenues of the Suez Canal during October this year achieved a significant increase of 12.4 percent, recording US$551.1 million, compared to $490.2 million during October 2020 – an increase of $60.9 million.
Rabie stressed that the significant increase in the navigation statistics in the canal during 2021 was mainly due to the flexible marketing policies adopted by the Suez Canal Authority in dealing with the various types of ships crossing the canal, especially liquefied natural gas tankers.
Navigational reports recorded an unprecedented increase in the tonnage of LNG carriers, which amounted to 84 tankers during October, compared to 46 tankers in October 2020, an increase of 82.6 percent.
The net tonnage of liquefied natural gas tankers increased by 87.5 percent while the total net tonnage of liquefied natural gas tankers during October 2021 reached 9.3 million tons, compared to 4.9 million tons during October 2020.
A significant increase in the number and tonnage of ships that crossed the canal was recorded during 2021, as the number of ships crossing from January to October reached 17,020 ships, compared to 15,640 ships during the same period of 2020, an increase of 1,380 ships or 8.8 percent.
The net tonnages across the canal increased during the first ten months of this year by 8.4 percent or one billion and 50 million tons, compared to 968.6 million tons during the same period of 2020, an increase of 81.4 million tons.
The revenues of the Suez Canal, despite various challenges, witnessed a major boom recently as navigation statistics from January to October 2021 recorded $5.2 billion, compared to $4.6 billion during the same period of 2020, an increase of 12.4 percent or $575.1 million.
