Suez protester accused of firing weapon during protest

The general prosecutor's office in Suez ordered activist Nasser al-Shafie be detained another four days on Monday pending an investigation.

According to the Suez Security Directorate, Shafie shot at police and protesters during the "Friday of Departure" protest against the Muslim Brotherhood on 8 February.

Police arrested Shafie Sunday evening, prompting opposition and liberal groups to stage an impromptu demonstration against his detainment.

The National Salvation Front and several political groups, including Wafd, Arab Democratic Nasserist, Karama and Constitution Parties, condemned Shafie's arrest, saying the charges are “fabricated.”
