Hundreds demonstrated in Suez Monday morning in protest to the speech of President Mohamed Morsy late Sunday, in which he declared a state of emergency and curfew in Suez, Ismailia and Port Said, and some said they will defy the curfew.
Traffic was shut down in Arbeen Square as a result of the large numbers of protesters, including the Union of Revolutionary Youth, the April 6 Youth Movement, the Suez Youth Bloc and the Black Bloc.
Demonstrators chanted, “Show your face, show your disgrace, you’ll see Morsy the same as Mubarak” and “Down with all the Brotherhood members.”
The Suez Youth Bloc has announced that demonstrations will occur daily starting from 9 pm, the time the curfew is supposed to begin, in response to the President’s decision, while warning the Armed Forces to remain neutral.
The bloc also issued a statement to the president, whom they referred to as “the new dictator Mohamed Morsy.”
“You have spoken about the need to respect the provisions of the judiciary and you were the first to violate the provisions of the judiciary with your previous constitutional declarations. You have talked about the call for a national dialogue and you were the first to promise and break [the vow] made in previous dialogues,” the statement said, addressing Morsy.
“Now you have gone back to the policies of your predecessor Mubarak: threats and intimidation.”
