Supply Ministry raises prices of sugar, cooking oil for 2nd time in 2 months

The Supply Ministry raised the prices of oil and sugar for ration card holders for the second time in two months.

Sugar saw a 20 percent with 1kg now costing LE8 up from LE7. The price of a 800g bottle of cooking oil went up to LE12 from LE10. The decision will be applied to these products starting Wednesday.

An informed source from the ministry told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the increase is due to the global price hikes of food commodities.

Yehia Kaseb, head of the grocery division at the Chamber of Commerce, denied any crisis in providing sugar and cooking oil, adding that the ministry concluded the distribution of January commodities. The shares for February will be distributed starting Wednesday.

Increasing prices means reducing the subsidies, which should contribute to making the products available for ration card holders.
