Syrian opposition figure denies report of planned Egypt meeting

A Syrian opposition media source in Cairo denied news that the Syrian National Council is holding a meeting in Cairo on Saturday to elect a presidential authority.

In statements to MENA, the source said the news leaked to media outlets is inaccurate. “How can a meeting for the council be held in Cairo before the Egyptian government grants its approval for the meeting and before support is rallied for recognition of the council?” the source added.

The formation of the council was announced on Sunday in Istanbul. The council brings together diverse Syrian opposition groups.

The general secretariat of the council has 29 members who represent independent opposition figures, members from the Muslim Brotherhood, local coordination committees, and the Supreme Council for the Leadership of the Syrian Revolution. It has the support of the General Authority of the Syrian Revolution and Kurdish and Assyrian parties.

The Syrian opposition will begin contacting different groups and political parties on Saturday in Egypt to drum up support for the Syrian National Council. When this happens, the council will hold its meeting in Egypt, the source said, adding that the process of amassing support would take at least two weeks.

AFP had reported that the Syrian National Council is holding a meeting in Cairo to elect an administrative authority, and added that a president will be elected for the council very soon.
