Syrian opposition to request Egypt’s official recognition

A delegation from the Syrian opposition will arrive on Saturday in Cairo to meet Arab League Chief Nabil al-Araby and ask Egypt's military and civilians leaders to recognize the Syrian National Council as a representative of the Syrian people.

The delegation is headed by Borham Ghalion, a prominent Syrian opposition figure, who is a nominated to head the council, which was formed in Istanbul under the auspices of the Turkish regime

Yasser al-Naggar, a member of the council, said the Syrian delegation will meet Araby to inform him of what the council has agreed on.

“We are seeking the Arab League’s recognition of the Syrian National Council which encompasses all Syrian groups,” he said.

Naggar added that the council consists of 190 Syrian figures. Twenty-nine of them have formed a secretariat general. The council has seven Syrian groups that represent all orientations both inside and outside the country.

The council includes Samir Nashar, who represents the Damascus Declaration, Farouq Tayfour, the deputy head of the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria, Borham Ghalion, who represents independents and Abdel Basit Sida who represents Kurds.

“Our main goal is to bring down Bashar al-Assad’s regime… we reject dialogue with Assad and his men inside and outside because time for dialogue is now over after Syrian blood was spilled.”

In early August, Egypt's Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel Amr said he was concerned that the situation in Syria was "heading to the point of no return."

"Reforms that are soaked in the blood of martyrs… are of no use," he was quoted as saying.
