Dozens of Cairo-based Syrians staged a protest on Sunday in front of the Arab League building, decrying Arab silence over the Syrian regime's bloody crackdown on protesters demanding the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad.
The demonstrations coincide with ceremonies organized by the League to hand over its leadership to its new secretary general, Nabil al-Araby, who succeeds Amr Moussa, Egypt's presidential hopeful.
More than 1300 are reported to have been killed by Syrian security and army forces since the breakout of anti-regime demonstrations in March.
The protesters called upon the new general secretary to exert serious efforts to stop "killings, detentions, and systematic torture" of Syrian revolutionaries.
Farhan Matar, one protester, urged Araby to pay attention to the Syrian people and said the public killing of Syrians is met with Arab states' inaction and shameful silence.
Mamoun al-Homsy, a former Syrian parliamentarian who has been in asylum in Canada, accused the Syrian ambassador in Cairo, Youssef al-Ahmad, of being a part of the ruling regime.
Homsy urged Egypt to take a decisive stance against Assad and his affiliates in Cairo.
