The leftist Tagammu opposition party has suspended the membership of Magdi el-Kordy, who recently founded a Gamal Mubarak-for-president electoral campaign.
The party plans to refer el-Kordy to an internal investigation.
“He has violated the party’s principles,” said Tagammu Party President Refaat el-Saeed, adding that el-Kordy “was never a leading member of the party.”
The moves by Tagammu prompted el-Kordy to retort: “The interests of the homeland are above partisan bickering.”
Earlier this week, members of the campaign–dubbed the Gamal Mubarak Support Coalition–plastered posters throughout Cairo calling for a Gamal Mubarak presidency.
Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies senior analyst Amr el-Shobky, for his part, sees the electoral posters as a means of gauging public reaction to a possible presidential bid by Gamal Mubarak, the 47-year-old son of President Hosni Mubarak.
“This campaign, spearheaded by a member of an opposition party, shows to what extent the the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) has infiltrated the ranks of the opposition,” el-Shobky said.
Political Analyst Ammar Hassan, for his part, anticipated a counter campaign by those opposed to a Gamal Mubarak presidency within the NDP.
