Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, head of the ruling military council, said Tuesday that Egypt is in a critical phase during which the nation’s interests must be put ahead of political affiliations or personal interest.
“The historic moment in which we are living, which will make a difference in this great nation’s history, requires national reconciliation,” he said.
During his meeting with heads and officers of the second field army, Tantawi said that the armed forces is loyal to Egypt and its people and that the dignity of the Egyptian citizen rises above all else.
Tantawi called on all sectors of society to disregard rumors that do not uphold the country’s best interests and which aim to drive a wedge between the people of Egypt and its armed forces, as well as to impede the country’s stability and its march toward democracy.
Tantawi went on to describe the armed forces’ role as “great,” saying that the military would be remembered throughout history with appreciation and pride for the men who put up with much so that the nation could pass through this critical phase. He said the armed forces had proven that it does not take sides and that the Egyptian people have the last word.
“The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces fulfilled its promise to hand over power to an elected authority in order to build a democratic state,” he said.
He praised the military for defending the homeland and protecting national security both and home and abroad and on their success in ensuring that the presidential election was carried out with transparency and integrity.
