Telecom Egypt CEO Tarek Tantawy said a new Mediterranean Sea internet cable installed by France would work ineffectively. The newer cable replaced an older one that broke earlier this week due to bad weather.
The cable “is being tested now, but it will not help Egypt even after it becomes fully operational,” he said, explaining that the new cable, which passes through Egypt, is primarily intended to connect Europe with Asia.
Tantawy warned of internet interruptions if the cables for which his company has contracted fail to begin operations soon.
