Telephone workers stage demos south of Cairo

Workers of the Maasara Telephone Equipment Manufacturing Company staged demonstrations on Tuesday, accusing the government of ignoring their demands. The 1200 workers say they haven’t been paid salaries for four months. They also demand that their factory, which was closed, be reopened.

The workers threatened to stage a sit-in in front of the parliament building if their demands are not met.

Mahmoud Sobayh, head of the Workers Syndicate, said he filed a complaint with the attorney general against the company management for failing to pay the workers their wages. He added that he plans to file a complaint with People’s Assembly Speaker Fathi Sorour, asking him to summon the management for investigation.

Sobayh said he agreed with the suggestion of the Minister of Manpower Aisha Abdel Hady to transfer 200 of the workers to Telecom Egypt, and to give the other workers financial compensation for early retirement.

"The problem will not be resolved unless the government gives the company’s current foreign owner’s shares to the shareholders and the creditors," Sobayh said.
