Qalyubia security services arrested 12 alleged terrorists affiliated to the Hasm Movement on Monday, after security officers tracked them down using documents found in an anti-terrorism raid last week.
The suspects, allegedly belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood's armed wing, were arrested in the districs of Khanka, Abu Zaabal and Shebin al-Qanater, in connection with assassination attempts on public figures and plots to provoke chaos in Egypt.
Security sources said that the movements of several members of the Hasm Movement had been observed over the past few days based on documents found at the apartment where Mohamed Kamal, leader of the Brotherhood’s armed wing, was discovered last week.
Kamal and his bodyguard Yasser Shehata were killed during an exchange of fire with security forces as they raided the apartment. He was the mastermind behind the assassination of former top prosecutor Hesham Barakat, police colonel Wael Tahon and several others, the Interior Ministry said.
Shehata, who was killed in the same incident, was responsible for communicating Kamal's orders to the armed groups. He had been convicted in his hometown of Assiut on charges of physical assault and the illegal detention of a man in the office of the Freedom and Justice Party, which is also linked to the Muslim Brotherhood.
Investigations showed that the arrested suspects received instructions from the international organization of the Muslim Brotherhood to carry out terrorist attacks to intimidate citizens and spread chaos.
