Egyptian Presidential Advisor for Health and Prevention Affairs Mohamed Awad Tag-Eddin warned on Monday that the coronavirus threat is not over, as the “EG.5” strain continues its spread.
During a phone interview with the Extra News channel, Tag-Eddin explained, “We are not in a state that calls for concern or panic, and the coronavirus pandemic will not end because it has become part of the prevailing respiratory viruses around the world.”
“Viruses undergo mutations, and the coronavirus has mutated hundreds of times,” he added.
“The new variant is one of the Omicron mutants, and it is the most widespread, and the last variant that exists so far from the coronavirus is Omicron.”
Tag-Eddin continued “The cases infected with the new mutant has three characteristics, some of which are infected and do not show symptoms, but are contagious, and some of them show symptoms, with many more severe cases.”
He concluded that not many deaths have been recorded from EG.5 so far.
No cases in Egypt
No infections thus far have been reported inside Egypt of the newest coronavirus mutant, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Health Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said in a telephone conversation with journalist Mohamed Ali Khair, on the Al-Mehwar satellite channel earlier in August.
The Ministry of Health is fully aware of all reports received regarding the new coronavirus mutant, Eg5, which has recently spread through the US and infected 3,000 people, he added.
He assured that the ministry is communicating with the World Health Organization to monitor the latest updates of this strain.
