The show must go on: Cairo Opera House to host three Christmas concerts amid COVID-19 second wave

The Cairo Opera House will host three Christmas concerts over the next week amid a surge in coronavirus cases.

On Thursday, the Opera House‘s Small Hall will host a Christmas-themed concert featuring the Boghdady Big Band with dancers from  Argentina. The show begins at 8 pm, and tickets are LE75.

Cairo’s Symphony Orchestra’s A Capella Choir will take the stage on Saturday in the Main Hall of the Opera House, performing a slew of the world’s most beloved Christmas songs.

Tickets are LE60 and the singers take the stage at 8 pm.

Finally, Monday will witness Gala El Hadidi’s Christmas concert, accompanied by Greg Martin. This show will take place at 8 pm at the house’s Small Hall. Tickets are LE210.

Tickets can be purchased at the opera house’s box office, or here.

The Cairo Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1959 under its first principal conductor Franz Litschauer. Since 1990 under music director Maestro Ahmed El Saedi (1991-2003), the orchestra has seen great success. Works by Bruckner, Mahler, Ravel, Debussy, Bartok, Hindemith, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich have become an integral part of the Orchestra’s repertoire.

The Opera House has reportedly been taking precautionary measures to ensure the safety of its guests, including purchasing seven disinfection corridors and a number of infrared thermometers for all theaters in Cairo, Alexandria and Damanhour.

The Opera House was built in 1869 under Khedive Ismail Pasha to celebrate the inauguration of the Suez Canal. It was originally named Khedivial (Royal) Opera House.

The original house burned down in 1971 and was not rebuilt until 1988.

The Opera House is now a world-renowned cultural landmark that has staked its claim as a significant place in the cultural landscape of Egypt and the Middle East.
