President Donald Trump said Monday that it’s Iran’s “last chance” to “sign a good document” with the United States, after again calling off strikes and promising to continue talks at the request of Persian Gulf allies.
“Many countries called,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “They all wanted to give this a last chance. This is a last chance.”
Pressed by reporters on what is different this time, given he has previously called off attacks, Trump said, “I want to give them every last chance before decapitation.”
Trump said talks with Iran are “going to go quickly,” projecting the Strait of Hormuz could open fully by Tuesday in what he considers “phase one” of an agreement.
“It’s not very complex,” Trump said, despite the trouble the administration is facing in ending the monthslong war.
The “second phase” is denuclearization, which he acknowledged would “take a little while.”
Those two goals were both part of the memorandum of understanding signed by Iran and the US in June.
