An Alexandria apartment building collapsed Thursday evening, killing at least three and injuring three others, a security source said on Friday.
The source told Al-Masry Al-Youm the three injured were found amid the debris of the collapsed five-story building, which is located in the Raml neighborhood of the city. They were hospitalized and are in critical condition, the source added.
Missions have been ongoing since late Friday to search for survivors or corpses, the source said.
The source said local authorities have decided to evacuate the neighboring seventeen-story building for fear it may be affected by the collapse.
Police inspectors found that residents had evacuated the building shortly before it collapsed. Authorities had previously ordered the eviction and demolition of the building, but this had been delayed.
Building collapses are frequent in the coastal city, with several taking place in recent years.
In December 2010, a residential building housing a clothes factory collapsed, killing 26 people and injuring 10.
In 2007, a building collapsed in Alexandria’s Loran neighborhood, killing 36 and injuring three. And in 2008, a building collapsed in the Fleming neighborhood, killing 21 and injuring eight.
