The Supreme Council of Antiquities has doubled the price of the tickets for the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square to increase revenue that is supposed to cover lighting and operation expenditures.
Mohamed Ali, Deputy Chief for the museum, told Al-Borsa newspaper that the new price in tickets, approved by the SCA, would increase 60 percent with prices reaching LE120 for foreign visitors and LE75 for morning visits.
Prices for foreign students will increase to LE60, up from LE35, marking a 71 percent increase. Additionally, prices for Egyptians and Arabs will increase to LE20 in the evening and LE10 in the morning seeing a 100 percent increase. Prices for Egyptian and Arab students will increase to LE 10 from LE5.
Tickets for entering the mummy halls in the museum will reach LE150 for foreigners compared to its old price at LE100. However, prices for foreign students will remain at LE 75. For Egyptian and Arab students visiting the mummy halls, the prices will double reaching LE60 for visitors and LE30 for students, compared to what its old price at LE30 for visitors and LE15 for students.
According to Ali, in April, the council approved opening the museum for evening visits starting from 5:30 to 9:00 pm on Sundays and Thursdays every week for a year.
The museum will receive visitors in the evening starting Thursday. Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anany told Al-Borsa that the price increase for evening tickets is due to the increasing costs of operation in the evening as the ministry will need to provide the necessary lighting for security throughout the museum.
With the work for developing the lighting both inside and outside the museum almost complete, security has been intensified with an increase in surveillance cameras throughout the museum.
Costs for developing the lighting reached LE1.2 million.
