Tosson protest ends with arrest of leader

A protest by Tosson residents which blocked the street leading to the Ministry of Agriculture headquarters ended yesterday when the protest's coordinator, Ashraf Ibrahim, was arrested by Giza security authorities.

Protesters had erected two goalposts and were holding a Ramadan football tournament in the street.

Ibrahim was referred to the Public Prosecution, which ordered his detention pending further investigation.

Residents of the Alexandrian district of Tosson were protesting the demolition of their homes, which the government says were built on state-owned land.

The protesters had earlier notified authorities of their plan to hold a collective Ramadan iftar and to organize a football tournament at the beginning of Ramadan.

According to the police, all the protesters had left the area yesterday, except for four.

Ibrahim was arrested on charges of undermining security and voluntarily obstructing the flow of traffic. He was also found to have eluded a prison sentence and was referred to the Alexandria Security Department.

Meanwhile, traffic has returned to normal in the Ministry of Agriculture's street, which was cleaned up by the Giza governorate after removing all protesters.
