Traditional masks being replaced with Guy Fawkes masks in mawlids

Visitors accustomed to the traditional hats and masks during mawlids, the Egyptian festivals celebrating the birth of Sufi saints, were shocked to see Guy Fawkes and horror-themed masks in the Sayeda Zeinab Mawlid celebrations.

Since the January 25 revolution, these new masks have been more popular, according to Ahmed al-Gebaly, 40, a street vendor who was selling masks at the Sayeda Zeinab Mouled.

Gebaly said he always goes to every mawlid.

Protests are also an opportunity for street vendors to sell their masks, Gebaly say, but the police often hunt them and consider them thugs.
