The Ministry of Health and Population in Egypt announced that four people were killed and 23 others injured Tuesday evening when a train crashed into a collision protection barrier at the end of the rail in Qalyub station.
The Transport Ministry said in a statement that the accident occurred at 7:20 p.m., while passenger train No. 557 was entering Qalyub station.
The train driver passed the closed semaphore and continued his way, which led the train to enter the tracks ending with a collision protection barrier at the end of the rail.
The railway semaphore signal functions similar to a traffic light, and arms are placed on it for the different light signals of the trains.
The statement indicated that as a result, the engine and the first coach of the train derailed.
The ministry said that 18 injured people were transferred to Qalyub Specialist Hospital, and three injured people were transferred to al-Qanater al-Khairiya Central Hospital, while two patients were transferred to Nasser Institute Hospital in Cairo.
It noted that 11 of the injured were discharged after receiving medical service, and the rest of the injured are receiving the necessary medical care.
The ministry announced the dispatch of 20 ambulances to the scene immediately after the accident was reported.
The injured were transferred to hospitals located in the vicinity of the accident, and three victims were treated at the accident site without hospitalization.
