TV journalist contemplates presidential bid

Journalist Ahmed al-Meslemany of the Dream satellite channel's Al-Tabaa al-Oula show is contemplating a presidential bid.

Meslemany said he may run for the office and told Al-Masry Al-Youm that a political party represented in Parliament has promised to provide him with the support of 30 members.

He said his options regarding the upcoming presidential race are open, especially after prominent figures and Nobel laureates Mohamed ElBaradei and scientist Ahmed Zewail announced they would not run.

Meslemany said several political movements and university students have pledged to endorse his bid.

Mohamed Tharwat, presenter of a program aired on satellite channel 25TV, said he filmed an episode with Meslemany and presidential hopeful Amr Moussa, and that it will be broadcast as a debate between them.

In an earlier interview on Masr al-Gedeeda talk show aired on privately owned TV channel Al-Hayat 2, Meslemany said he wrote the speech that former President Hosni Mubarak delivered during the revolution on 2 February 2011.

Meslemany said his action was “patriotic.” He said he doesn’t have a copy of the speech because he wrote it quickly.

He also said during the interview that military leader Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi had failed to convince Mubarak to step down during the first days of the revolution.
