An official security source at the Interior Ministry announced on Sunday that 12 terrorists were killed in a security raid at the Malalha area of al-Arish city in North Sinai.
The National Security Agency was tipped off that a group of terrorists were using a walled land plot in the Malalha area as a hideout.
After taking legal action and coordinating with different security bodies, the terrorists were targeted by security forces and wiped out during an exchange of fire.
The source added that the terrorists are being identified, and four automatic guns, a cartridge rifle, ammunition and two explosive devices ready for detonation were seized during the raid.
Egyptian Armed Forces have launched the “Comprehensive Operation Sinai 2018” campaign in February to counter the increasing terrorist threat from North Sinai.
Since 2014, the region had witnessed a growing number of terrorist attacks carried out by IS and its affiliated group the Sinai Province, such as various attacks against the army and police.
In retaliation, North Sinai-based state security carried out large-scale security sweeps and military operations.
