Twenty-four soldiers from the Central Security Forces were injured after protesters hurled stones at them, the Cairo Security Directorate said in a statement on Sunday.
The statement added that Central Security Forces replaced army soldiers in front of Sheikh Rihan Street, perpendicular to Qasr al-Aini Street, a major downtown thoroughfare in Cairo.
“The CSF is not armed except for shields and helmets… the number of protesters increased and hurled stones and Molotov cocktails against the security forces,” said the statement.
The military built a concrete wall across Qasr al-Aini Street last night in an attempt to confine the clashes. A wall on Sheikh Rihan Street was built two weeks ago to prevent protesters from reaching Ministry of Interior headquarters.
Meanwhile, eyewitnesses say that many protesters were injured after clashing with police. Motorcycles were seen in the square transporting wounded protesters to the square's field hospital.
