Uganda’s ambassador welcomes Egypt’s reinstatement at AU

Uganda's Ambassador to Cairo Richard Laos welcomed Egypt's return to the African Union, adding that this issue is not subject to dispute since Egypt has implemented the roadmap by approving the Constitution, held the presidential elections and plans to hold parliamentary elections later this year.

"It is the right of Egypt to return to the African Union and to regain its leading role in the continent," said Loas in a statement to the Middle East News Agency Thursday. " We are pleased with this decision."

Laos added that the president of Uganda is interested in meeting with Egypt's new president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

He added that his country aspires to strengthen relations with Egypt in all fields. He also said that he is happy that Sisi is working to resolve any dispute with Ethiopia through dialogue and diplomatic means.

He added that the African Union's Peace and Security Council had agreed to reinstate Egypt after a meeting late Tuesday,  ending its nearly year-long suspension from the group because of the country's alleged deviation from the democratic path.

Egypt was suspended from the 54-member pan-African bloc last July, upon the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsy by the military.
