An unidentified man has set fire to the Sultan Ahmed Mosque in the city of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. The mosque is supervised by the Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs, which is affiliated with the Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs.
Head of the union Wisil Arslan said worshippers saw smoke coming out of the mosque on their way to perform Fajr prayer at dawn.
Firefighters were quickly contacted, but the fire damaged the walls and carpets of the mosque, Arslan said.
He added that surveillance cameras recorded a man entering the mosque carrying an unknown substance which he used to ignite the fire in the mosque, as well as an affiliate center.
