The representative leading a United Nation’s investigation into allegations against its relief agency in Gaza has arrived in Israel, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
Catherine Colonna, the former French foreign affairs minister, will lead an investigation into conduct by the United Nations Works and Relief Agency (UNRWA) after Israel claimed 13 members of the group were directly involved in the October 7 attack on Israel, and hundreds more are connected to Hamas.
The committee was established by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Remember: The allegations against the organization have not been made public and neither Israel nor UNRWA have specified the nature of the alleged involvement of UNRWA employees in the events of October 7.
In late February, the head of UNRWA said Israel still had not provided evidence to support its allegations that members of the main United Nations aid agency in Gaza were involved in the October 7 Hamas attacks.
Following Israel’s allegations, UNRWA’s main donor, the United States, and a number of countries paused funding to the organization, which employs about 13,000 people in Gaza, as the humanitarian disaster spirals in the besieged Palestinian enclave.
