United Nations warns of humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza

The United Nations (UN) and various international organizations have warned of the worsening humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, amid a severe shortage of shelter supplies and Israel’s continued restrictions on aid deliveries.

This comes as Hamas accuses Israel of committing serious and deliberate violations of the ceasefire agreement.

The UN and Palestinian officials reported an urgent need for at least 300,000 new tents to shelter approximately 1.5 million displaced people in the Strip.

The World Health Organization confirmed that more than 4,000 people are living in high-risk coastal areas, with 1,000 of them directly affected by the rough seas.

The International Organization for Migration warned of the potential drowning of hundreds of thousands of displaced people due to the ban on the entry of building and shelter materials.

It also noted the risk of disease outbreaks due to the lack of sanitation and waste management systems.

Aid delayed

The spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Gaza, Olga Cherevko, warned of delays in the arrival of humanitarian aid to the Strip due to the prioritization of commercial goods.

She stated that while the humanitarian community continues to provide assistance, the needs are outpacing the response, given the limited volume of supplies entering the Strip and the growing list of items that the occupying authorities continue to prevent from entering.

Meanwhile, Hamas leader and member of the negotiating delegation Ghazi Hamad said that the Israel continues its deliberate violations of the ceasefire agreement, particularly regarding humanitarian aid, the missing persons of martyrs, and prisoners.

He warned that the continuation of these violations jeopardizes the agreement.

UN and human rights experts affirmed that the Gaza catastrophe is revealing not only existing double standards but also the urgent need to rectify the flaws in the international system, especially concerning proper justice.
