Higher Education Minister Motaz Khorshed said Wednesday that deans of state-owned universities will now be elected by committees comprised of all types of faculty members, including part-time professors.
The minister explained that departments with less than 20 members will have one representative in the committee, those with between 20 and 100 members will have two representatives, and those with over 100 members will have three representatives.
Egypt’s revolution has taken to its higher education institutions, which have witnessed some reforms of late. For example, groups such as the Coalition of University Professors have pushed for a faculty referendum on how to best select university and department heads. The results in early July showed that faculty members favored choosing them by direct elections, which remains a point of contention.
