University professors demand sweeping changes

The Coalition of University Professors on Monday organized protests at universities in Cairo, Alexandria, Assiut and Mansoura, demanding the removal of their administrations by the end of this academic year and the election of new ones.

The coalition also demanded increases in professors’ salaries and budgets for scientific research as well as the formation of a syndicate for university professors.

Spokesman Amr Dareg said the coalition had cancelled a planned march to the cabinet due to the fragile security situation in the country.

Higher Education Minister Amr Ezzat Salama said a ministerial committee would meet on Wednesday to discuss the best procedure for the election of university directors and faculty members for the coming academic year.
