Update: Abducted Hungarian citizen released

The Hungarian peacekeeping officer abudcted by unknown assailants in Sinai on Thursday has been released, AFP quoted security officials as saying. No more details regarding the release or the victim's captors have been provided.

Initial reports had mistakenly identified the vitim as an American tourist.

The officer was not following security protocol at the time of his kidnapping, the security sources said.

The kidnappers allegedly demanded the release of a suspect arrested on charges of drug possession in return for the Hungarian hostage.

Another security source had said that unidentified gunmen blocked the Kantara-Arish International Road on Thursday.

Since the 25 January revolution, the number of foreigners abducted in Sinai has increased significantly in the midst of a nationwide security vacuum.
