The upper part of royal obelisk that dates back more than 4,000 years has been discovered in the Saqqara area outside Cairo and near Giza, a statement released from the Antiquities Ministry said on Wednesday.
According to the statement, archaeologists managed to unearth part of the obelisk that is made of pink granite and is about 2.5 meters 9yards high. The discovered obelisk belongs to the mother of King Pepi II of the 6th dynasty.
Pepi II ascended the throne at the age of six. He succeeded to the throne after the death of Merenre I, and was traditionally thought to be the son of Pepi I and Queen Ankhesenpepi II.
The excavation work is underway to unearth other parts of the obelisk. One side of this discovery bears an ancient Egyptian cartouche with hieroglyphic scripts.
