U.S. condemns arrest of Brotherhood spokesperson

The United States has criticised the arrest of Gehad al-Haddad, spokesperson for the Muslim Brotherhood, condemning it as “politicised," Al-Ahram reported.

State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki criticized the arrest. "We are opposed to all politicized arrests," she said, "including this one."

Haddad studied and worked in the U.S. for several years and went to university in the United Kingdom.

Psaki added however that the U.S. administration remains focused "on encouraging the interim government to move forward with an inclusive process that brings representatives from all sides."

Gehad al-Haddad is the son of Essam al-Haddad, international relations adviser to ousted President Mohamed Morsy. He was also detained in the wake of Morsy's 3 July army-sponspored overthrow.

Haddad was a key voice for the Muslim Brotherhood and its National Alliance in Support of Legitimacy following the takeover.
