The US Embassy in Cairo warned American citizens against traveling to the Sinai Peninsula, with the exception of Sharm el-Sheikh by air.
“The US Embassy is closely following reports of explosions in Taba and Nuweiba in South Sinai, Egypt, including initial reports of individuals with minor injuries,” a statement for the embassy said on Friday.
“The source of the explosions is under investigation by Egyptian authorities. US citizens are reminded that the Sinai Peninsula (except for Sharm El Sheikh by air) is considered a ‘Do Not Travel’ zone according to the most recent Department of State travel advisory,” the statement added.
Egyptian security sources reported on Friday morning that a projectile had fallen on the city of Nuweiba in South Sinai Governorate, within the scope of the Third Field Army on desert land, leading to an explosion without any casualties.
An Egyptian military spokesperson said that an “unidentified drone” fell on Friday morning near Taba Hospital in South Sinai Governorate.
He added that “The drone crash in Taba is under investigation by the relevant authorities,” noting that the accident left six people injured, who received the necessary treatment and were discharged.
The Israeli army announced that an aerial threat was recently detected in the Red Sea area, with fighter jets called to deal with it.
The Israeli army indicated that the matter remains under investigation, and added, “To our understanding, the strike that took place in Egypt originated in this threat.”
The statement pointed out that Israel, along with Egypt and the US, are working to strengthen protection in the region against threats from the Red Sea region.
