US President mourns death of three American soldiers killed in Jordan attack

The US Central Command announced on Sunday that three American soldiers were killed and over 30 others were injured in a drone attack that targeted a base in northeastern Jordan near the border with Syria.

US President Joe Biden mourned the incident in a statement, “Today, America’s heart is heavy. Last night, three US service members were killed – and many wounded – during an unmanned aerial drone attack on our forces stationed in north-east Jordan near the Syria border.”

“The attack on our forces was carried out by supported extremist groups operating in Syria and Iraq, and we will hold accountable all those responsible for the attack that targeted our forces at the appropriate time and in the manner we choose”, he said.

He added: “While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq.”

The official spokesperson for the Jordanian government said that “the American base that was targeted is located outside the borders of the Kingdom.”

“Terrorist militias carried out the attack that targeted Al-Tanf base and the base is outside our border,” he added.

The US Department of Defense described the attack as a “dangerous escalation.”
