US stresses support for Egypt in coming years: foreign minister

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri described his meetings with American officials and congressmen in Washington, D.C. as "fruitful" given that talks have revealed Egypt and the United States' agreement on many topics.

Shoukri added in a press statement Wednesday that the US administration and many congressmen agreed on the importance of Egypt's role in confronting threats to regional security in the Middle East and expressed willingness to continue supporting Egypt in the coming years to achieve economic growth and political stability.

Shoukri's meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry focused not only on the regional security situation in the Middle East, but also on promoting economic relations between Egypt and the United States, Shoukri added, stressing that there is an American interest in Egypt's success to achieve economic growth in all fields.

Egypt is keen to develop relations with the United States, Shoukri said, referring to the close consultation and coordination between the two foreign ministries to formulate common positions on regional and international issues.

Shoukri's visit focused on explaining the developments in Egypt's domestic affairs, especially the completion of the roadmap by electing the House of Representatives and the commitment of Egypt to political and economic reform. He also explained Egypt's position on regional issues, including the Syrian and Libyan crises and the Palestinian cause.
